Things I Require in My Purse

Jen's picture

Jen over at Denton Sanatorium is hosting a gift swap, with the theme of "things I require in my purse."  I love this idea, and it got me thinking, just exactly what do I *require* in my purse?  I think of myself as fairly low maintenance, I'm a simple girl, or so I believed until I took inventory. Maybe not so low maintenance-other words like control nazi and married to a germ freak? came to mind.

I would love to see a list of what other women *require* to be in their purse.  Wonder what it says about us?

Here is what I require in my purse

empathy

Sometimes I think I know how others feel.  Sometimes I wish they would stop wallowing.  Sometimes I wish I could heal them.  Sometimes I deeply feel their pain.  Sometimes I scorn their pain, believing my own is so much worse.  Then something happens to make me realize I truly can not fathom the depth of pain others suffer.

I must need this lesson....often, because it seems to keep repeating itself--hard head perhaps? or hard heart?

In any case this last week I have learned empathy for those who suffer chronic pain, especially  headaches.  And I learned the hard way.  I have had the most intense pain of my life in the form of a headache.  It began last Monday, it hurt right where the pointer finger is in this picture.  I took some Motrin and hoped it would pass.  It was worse Tuesday, it began to move into my jaw.  I thought maybe I really had a bad cavity, and would need to see the dentist.  I hoped I was wrong, I really hat the dentist.  I decided to see if it would pass. After all, it was just a headache--how long could it last?

Turns out it could last a very, very long time.

The pain grew worse Wednesday, but I was busy and had lots to pack in on my day off, so I just took some Motrin and lived with it.  By this point I had upped my dosage to 6 pills, barely took the edge off the pain. Thursday dawned, and I had managed to eek out 4 hours of sleep, otherwise in too much pain. I was dizzy and my vision was blurry.  I attributed it to lack of sleep and not feeling well enough to eat much. Soft foods were the only things I could eat, chewing hurt too much.  I scrambled through the day, thankful I didn't live with this on a regular basis, and wondering when it would stop.

That night I got about 3 hours of sleep,  and when Friday dawned I was thankful it was almost the weekend.  I headed to the Orthodontist with Quinn and he checked me for symptoms of TMJ, didn't seem like that was the case.  Back home and ready to work, I could barely open my mouth enough to talk and wondered how I would make it though 8 hours on the phones.  I counted my blessings when my boss took me off the phones and gave me paperwork to do--without my saying a word.  Tender mercy indeed.

5:30 came and I was sick with pain.  It radiated from my temples down along my lower jaw and my dental work on my upper jaw was so tender and painful.  I couldn't move my head from side to side and I decided to relax in a hot bath, having read that maybe warm water compresses would ease the pain.  It had slightly eased about 30 minutes later, then came back with a wallop as I was getting dressed.  I became nauseous and started vomiting, I started seeing spots. I sat on the bathroom floor bawling.   Jeff was gone, but I had had enough and decided I would have to go to the Doctor.  I headed to urgent care, and the doctor.

Two hours later I emerged with Jeff at my side, three bruised sites from blood draw attempts, a new understanding of what a CT scan involves, a prescription for a strong anti-inflammatory, and no answers.

Thankfully the medicine did it's job and by Saturday morning I was up and able to go to Basketball games and Wrestling meets.  With just a dull throb ever present in the background, and only in my temples.  Sunday was the same, and so is today.  I did hear back the my CT looked totally  normal, and my blood work is clean as a whistle.  Which is quite a relief, but brings me no closer to answers.  I have two  more days on the meds and then the Doctor wants me to go off of them.

I have no clue what happens if it comes back.  The dentist and ortho don't seem to thing it stems from their side of things, and because my jaw doesn't hurt at all and my temples still throb I'm inclined to agree with them. The Doctor isn't any more help though, with no history of headaches, no changes in medication, and no injuries to explain my pain.

I hope it goes away.

Soon.

Looking back at the last week I realize a few things 1-I'm really stubborn when it comes to pain.  hate the doctor, hate the dentist, and really just want it all to go away. 2-I'm no judge of the pain others endure.  I don't think I can adequately convey how exquisite the pain I was in.  I realize I have no grounds to try and judge another and the ability to cope and navigate through their own pain.  and 3-I am so thankful I've been healthy for 95% of my life.  So thankful that most of the time my body functions as it was designed to, and most of the time it does that in spite of, rather because of, the care I give it.  Finally, I don't share this because I want your sympathy, or for you to bring my a casserole.  I wrote this post for myself, to remind myself of lessons learned, and to record this experience in case it happens again.

The Best remedy for a Winter Cold

My husband and kids have been passing around a virus like it's a hot potato, and I was smugly staying out of the way.  Until a few days ago, when it smacked me right in the face.  I really don't like being sick.  Feeling out of sorts no matter what I do, and getting nothing done that needs to be done.  UGH!

I went to bed at 6:30 last night and slept until 8 this morning.  Not like me.  And then my head hurt, and my feet were cold, and my bones ached, and our yard looked like this, which made me want to stay in bed, but I couldn't sleep anymore.  I guess 13.5 hours was enough.

A Discovery of Witches: A Novel
I decided I needed a book, but nothing looked good.  This is when having an e-reader really comes in handy! I started browsing my "wish list" on Amazon, that's where I stick a book someone suggests until I decide to buy it.  And I found this, A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harness.  And I am so hooked! I've been reading all day, that and a cup of peppermint tea are the perfect remedies for my blahs.

The person who recommended it said it's like Harry Potter for grown ups, and so far I'm really enjoying it.  Has some suggestions of sex but nothing graphic, and no language that will shock you.  It's just fun, indulgent reading.  So, if you're in need of something to make a few hours (or days) disappear give it a try!

Mass of Humanity

all images from Google
Have you ever found yourself in a mass of humanity?  Not a group gathered for a protest, or united for a cause.  Just a crush of people.

I don't really love the city to be honest, I'm much happier in the suburbs.  But I do love a good adventure, and our trip last month was a great one!

One of my favorite parts was being caught in the mass of humanity that is NYC.  I especially loved the subway, everywhere you looked was someone new, all doing their own thing.  And every single one of them was different.  I think I could have ridden the subway for hours.  I love to people watch anywhere I go, but this was so much more than that.

As I sat there and looked around I found myself wondering about their lives.  There were the young guys in their 20s talking about watching the TV show "Pan Am" because they'd love to "hit that."  That made me laugh.  There was the young mom with her little one in a stroller that she carried up and down the stairs and I wondered what it was like to be a mom with little ones in a place like NYC.

There were two college students talking about classes and exams and clubs.  There was a girl who went to the Fashion Institute studying for a test.  There was an elderly man who rode with his eyes closed the entire way.  I wondered if he was praying he looked so peaceful and meditative.  But maybe he was just sleeping.  That's the fun of people watching, there are so many options.

But what really got to me was the sudden surety I had that our Father in Heaven knows each and every one of those people.  To me they were just a mass of humanity, but to Him they are individuals.  He knows them, He loves them.  Every. Single. One.  I came close to tears as this realization struck me.  I am so thankful to be a part of this mass of humanity, and to be known as one singular, valuable, treasured daughter to Him.

Doing less to Become More

I have found myself wondering if I'm really becoming the best version of myself.  Wondering if who I am right now is someone I could be happy living with for the rest of my life.  I decided the answer is no, I'm not becoming my best self and I'm not happy living with myself (as I am right now) for the rest of my life.

Pinned ImageI've had a restless sense of discontent with where I am on the journey of life.  A sense that I am wasting my time, not moving forward or progressing, but just treading water-sometimes even sliding backwards.  I think that has been the most disturbing realization, the idea that I am simply biding my time, having become complacent about who I am and where I am in my faith and learning and growth.  Just doing my best to get through each day without real purpose and focus.

I should say the past few years have been, without a doubt, the most difficult in my life.  I have been faced with trials and obstacles I never dreamed of.  But do any of us believe those trials we hear about in others lives would really happen to us?    That we will ever be called upon to suffer in such a way that would try our very souls? I don't think I really did.  I knew there would be hard times, but I don't think I really believed anything could happen that would rattle me deep down.  Dramatic? Yes.  Real?  Yes.  Difficult to face my own shortcomings and own my  weaknesses in the face of these trials? Definitely.

Adversity does nothing if not force us to face what we are really made of, and require us to find our true selves.  I've been disappointed in what I have found.  More than anything I have realized that I want to be more than what I am.  I want to become the person I hoped I was.  I want to be more....  More what? More faithful, more resilient, more prayerful, more understanding, more loving, more forgiving, more steadfast, and most of all more submissive.  Not submissive like a doormat you see, but more willing to accept these trials, and find the strength and faith to persevere steadfastly.

Pinned ImageAfter reading that you'd think my resolution and "word" for 2012 would be More.  But it's not that simple, that just didn't sit right.  I realized one word and one focus just wouldn't do it for me this year, although it's worked like a charm for me for the past 5+ years.  Not this year.  I've changed, and my new self needs something new. Instead I've decided to simplify my focus and concentrate on the basics every day.

It seems an odd concept, scale back and do less to become more.  In reality I'm only refocusing, not doing less. So, I don't have a "word" and I don't have a grand plan. I'm simply on a journey to become more than what I am. And in so doing to start moving forward instead of simply treading water.
