My peach tree is one of the best parts of my home, it gives generously, and my family adores the fruits of it's long labor. Last year I made 70 pints of peach jam- not just peach though, we enjoyed strawberry peach, apricot peach, blueberry peach, tropical peach, raspberry peach, and blackberry peach as well. It was heavenly all winter long. We also enjoyed giving some away, and eating some fresh off the tree.
This year our peaches were taking their sweet time getting ripe. My neighbors were reporting fruit falling from the branches in their yards, tales of sweet jam were making their way through the neighborhood, and still I waited. Last week it was time, I was done waiting, we were going to pick that tree clean and get started. I sent my two oldest boys out to get started as I lined up all my jam making supplies...30 pounds of sugar, boxes of pectin, and clean jars on the counter. Not two minutes passed and those boys were back. Kiefer said "Mom, I think you have too much sugar." What was he saying? Did he even know how much sugar went into a batch of jam? "These are all the peaches there are," he said, holding out a measly 15-20 peaches at the bottom of the basket.
Impossible! I thought they were trying to get out of tree picking duties, so I brushed them off and made them come out to the tree with me. My jaw dropped. What had been branches dripping with peaches just a few days before was now a barren tree. Completely empty. We had been Peached Out! I was shocked! Who does that? I kept thinking! Who steals PEACHES?
Now, you may wonder how we didn't notice, but you see our fruit trees are hidden in a corner of the yard, invisible from the street, or any other part of the front or back yards. You can't even see the tree tops from anywhere but the alley. Anyone could have come and gone through the back gate --located oh so conveniently mere feet from the trees.

OH dear! Sorry about your peaches! Maybe you can just make strawberry jam instead this year. ?? Well... I believe that you get what you give.... so karma will come back to bite them in the you know what.
what???? someone actually came and stole the entire crop??? that is just plain mean ... and if the tree top is only visible from the lane, that person probably lives near you as well ... That's just so low .....
What a disappointment that must have been! I can't imagine who would steal peaches!
So sorry to hear about your peaches! How rude of people to steal! Yikes! You live in Mesa...I live in Chandler. Nice to meet you.
Jam making is such a delightful experience, how sad you don't have a crop this year.
That's an all time low, stealing peaches~ What a disappointment!
P.S. Love your barefeet pic in your header :-)
This is awful - who would steal peaches? Maybe you could set up some sort of booby trap on the apricot tree to alert you if someone is messing with it! Kathy
It is wonderful you still have the apricots. I hope the peach thief didn't notice them on his last visit.
That is a dirty rotten shame....Weird I tell ya. Maybe they will bite into the pit and break a tooth or something...lol, just kidding. Have a great day.
My jaw is still on the floor.
Right-thinking tells me that they must have needed them more than I did. Being human, it's really hard to go there right now.
Good luck with the apricot watch.
Holy Toledo! You've got to be kidding me!
Someone is going to hell in a hand basket, eh?
Holy Cow! You might have to pad lock your gate! That is so terrible!
What villains!
And I too have been the victim of peach thievery, but I will allow you to use my beautiful image of peach jam. Because, as you rightfully stated, that's the kind of gal I am.
Here's to many bottles of apricot!
So sorry about the theft - have you called in Colombo yet?!!
Super ‘V’ post – so interesting & enjoyable!
LOLA:)
PS Mine this time is HERE. Hope you can join me!
what villains Boooo!!!
You sure it wasn't squirrels, I know they ate my tomatoes a couple of years back lol. That's terrible. I would tell everyone in the neighborhood that this happened. Then I would tell them you put up a video camera to see if the thieves try to get your apricots. You don't have to do it but maybe it will be enough to scare them off, ha.
That is horrible! Your story is great, but the stolen peaches, so sad. And now you have to worry about them coming back.
Oh NONONONO! I wonder if our neighbor still has peaches! I will run over there later and check! I'm also checking with someone else I know who had a ton of peaches on their tree.
I can't believe someone would have done this.
I'm going to come back later and post again when I find out for you!
Darn! I called around. Everyone is out of peaches. I had an offer of apples but that doesn't sound like what you're looking for.
Thanks for linking up this week for Alphabe-Thursday's letter "V"!
Gosh...violent peach thieves should be strung up! I'm so sorry that happened to you.
I will give you an A+ and we will have to have some classes on forensic fruit theft.
So sorry to hear of your loss. And here I was hoping you'd be offering up jars of jam like Miss Jen.
I CANNOY ABIDE A THIEF!As someone else said, it is probably a person that lives nearby! Do you have a big dog????Maybe you if you don't,one of your friends will loan you theirs. Make sure it has big teeth!
I would have been awful upset about that! So looking forward to making peach jam from your own tree. One year someone stold the Christmas tree lights right off the bushes in front of our house. Then on two separate years someone cut down "Christmas" trees from my dad's yard right around Christmas...such a violation! So sorry about your peaches! Joni
Hi! Listen, I need you to e-mail me if you can ( jennymatlock at cox dot net ) Our older neighbor that had all the peaches called me and they have quite a few in the fridge and she wants to give them to you!
We'll pick them up and drop them by (or you can stop over and pick them up!)
We're Brown and Gilbert. I think you are pretty close to us!
Jenny
None of our fruit trees ever seemed to take, we had two very old pear trees that were ancient and the previous owner did not prune or care for in any way, a handful of times of the past 24+ years they have produced tiny hard pears...nothing to put up. we tried planting, apples, apricots and cherries...they never took. we did manage to produce raspberries for a handful of years then they stopped producing, we thought ok a dormant year, the following year there were less bushing, and no fruit, and then the year after that no bushes at all. The deer did the fruit trees in while they were young, but the raspberries were in a tiny fenced in area, we made it narrow so the deer couldn't jump in.
but for about 10 years we went to U-pick farms, and we put up all kinds of Jam, plums in port wine, brandied pears. Applesauce, apple pie filling, cherry pie filling peach pie filling.
Then I went back to college, then worked F/T and commuted so we did not do any of that, Hubster gardened like e/o year for a bit. In 2005 I had an on-the-job-injury, that became a nightmare due to MRSA setting in, and now, I have limited use of my upper limbs, and my lower limbs were already on the way out, plus now I have inherited my Dad's lumbar stenosis. so standing on my feet in front of a counter, stove or table for more than 20-30 minutes basically does me in.
I SOOO miss my own strawberry jam, I can taste it! we do applesauce yearly cause that is easy, and I freeze it. We even used to make and put up our own spagetti sauce. my little country life :( I wish I could go back to 2004.
I hope you enjoy the peach/raspberry jam, it looks tasty!
Susan
PS...I just turned 50 on tuesday, we we were at the hieght of our canning years I was in my late 20-mid 30's...all the women my husband worked with, with few exceptions were my age, they thought I was nuts. I also hang laundry outside. and actually cook (not as much now) they all did frozen and take out. I was proud to not be a mom like that. :)
